What is Spirituality?

What is spiritual wellness you might ask?

Do you have to be religious to be spiritual?

This post will dissect those questions and discuss how you can practice spirituality daily as part of your wellness routine.

Spirituality, like the other dimensions of wellness, is going to mean different things to everyone. For some it may have a religious connotation, for others it’s the connection they feel to a certain place or when doing a certain activity. To help ground us, let’s first look at a definition of spirituality provided by Oxford Languages.

Spirituality is the quality of being concerned with the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things.

This definition provides a much broader definition of what spirituality means. There isn’t a religious component included or excluded within the sentence. There isn’t a specific way or method to practice or express this dimension. That part is up to the individual.

What’s unique about our philosophy at Wellness Definition, is we don’t tell our clients/readers what a dimension “should” mean to them, we encourage and coach to discover the individual meaning that resonates with them.

What are some ways that you currently incorporate elements of spirituality in your daily life?

Below are some examples, but again this is YOUR definition so use or create your own!

  • Meditation
  • Prayer
  • Mindfulness
  • Journaling
  • Time in nature
  • Deep breathing
  • Practicing gratitude

That sounds great, but why is spirituality important?

Ultimately, it’s up to the individual to decide the value they place on spirituality. For those who do place value on spirituality, some benefits can include:

  • Stress reduction
  • Deeper connection with purpose
  • Greater self awareness

This is just an overview, or tip of the iceberg with spirituality. There are so many more avenues to be explored and topics discussed. In closing, I would encourage you to find a quiet place at home and grab a journal, take a walk in nature and think about what spirituality means to you and what’s ONE way you can infuse it in your daily wellness practices.
